Implementing the AISC Direct Analysis Method
2005 (and 2010) AISC Specification

Presenter: Jason Ericksen, S.E.

The Direct Analysis Method included in the 2005 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings represents a significant change to the way engineers perform stability design.  The method is more direct (as the name implies) and often more accurate than previous methods.  The detailed requirements of the method and answers to frequently asked questions will help illustrate the ‘How To’ discussion of the new method.

The discussion will include how to calculate and apply notional loads, the required stiffness reductions for lateral members, and the implications of what analysis method is selected.  This will include advice on how to make the necessary decisions while executing the method and how best to use design software as part of the process.  This presentation will offer a simple step-by-step guide, using practical analysis and design examples to help you implement the Direct Analysis Method.

Speaker: Jason Ericksen is the Technical Manager for CSC Inc.  Jason manages the technical support for Fastrak Building Designer and TEDDS for CSC in the United States.  He also helps ensure that customer requirements are communicated effectively through our support team and onto the software development team.  He’s been a licensed structural engineer in Illinois for more than 10 years.  Before joining CSC in 2008, Jason was the Director of the Steel Solutions Center at the American Institute of Steel construction.  In this role, Jason was in charge of making sure that all engineering questions about the design and construction of structural steel buildings were answered correctly.  Jason has delivered many technical seminars on various subjects, including the Direct Analysis Method, as a representative of AISC.
